Vittles & Vice (Diptych) – Mixed-Media Chicago Collage

Overview 

A city seen through appetite and nostalgia. Vittles & Vice is a two-panel mixed-media work where abstract atmosphere meets vintage collage: glints of streetlights, a fedora’d figure, a streetcar, and ghostly façades drift through veils of smoky whites, steel greys, and ember reds. Up close you’ll find tiny line-drawn “Easter eggs”—menu scribbles, dotted pathways, and hints of long-gone Chicago haunts. From across the room it feels cinematic; at arm’s length it whispers stories.

Inspiration

Shannon Yelland, the artist was sparked by reading Patricia Bronté’s book: Vittles and Vice—her love letter to Chicago’s Near North Side—this duo becomes a scavenger hunt of memory: what’s vanished, what remains, and how the city keeps feeding us. Each mark is a route between vintage food lore and modern nightlife—a map for the curious.
